Into the Mystic

"Coneflowers", 4" x 4", oil on canvas

With the world in turmoil, I was distracted from getting ready for the Mystic Art Show earlier in the week. It’s easy to let yourself think about things other than your work, especially when you’re your own boss. Of course you’ll have to make up the work at some point anyhow, since there’s no one else to do it so it doesn’t really pay off. But, it’s more of a state of mind and it is easy to become overwhelmed by all that’s around us. The trick is to stay focused, I can hear family members chuckling at that, my being focused, that is. And sometimes it takes a good friend to tell you to “snap out of it!”, in the nicest of terms, but you get the message.

It’s 6:30 a.m. and I have a long list of to do’s before I set out. It’s at this point I always think, I really should have a checklist. I’ve started one but I’ve never quite finished it. I never finished the course on getting organized either, that says something right there. To be honest though, I think it’s more important that I spend my time painting. I’ve gotten several completed lately, but alas not all are dry enough to bring to this show, so they’ll have to wait until Portland, ME in two weeks.

I’m also thinking ahead to next week. It’s the annual Paint Out with the Sharon Art Center, here in Peterborough. A Paint Out is when artists spend a period of time, in this case a five days (Monday – Friday) painting outside in designated areas and then gather at the end of it to offer the paintings for sale. In this case the opening will be at the Sharon Art Center on Friday evening. It called a wet paint sale with the work fresh off the easel as it were. The designated areas are all around Peterborough. I’m leaning towards painting downtown, it’s such a pretty town, but I should be focused on the Mystic show – see what I mean!

So, without further ado, it’s time to start running, so to speak. There’s no more time to waste. Into the Mystic seems to work here, between it being Mystic and all the unknowns that can happen with a show. So with a burst of excitement and an little anxiety, time to get moving.

A painter, writer, and photographer still trying to figure out what I want to be when I grow up, although the growing up part seems pretty hopeless at this point.
